How did a school named after St. Vincent DePaul become the Blue Demons? The nickname’s origins are fairly benign, with no real religious connotations. When St. Vincent’s College changed its name to DePaul University (and also opened its doors to women and people of any religion), its athletic teams wore a large “D” on their uniforms. A game announcer called them the “D-men,” and the “Demons” nickname was born. They became the Blue Demons in particular to differentiate from their affiliated preparatory high school of the same name.
